A Heart-Wrenching Goodbye: Three beloved elderly lions from Christchurch's Orana Wildlife Park have been euthanised, leaving a profound sense of loss among the staff and community. This emotional decision comes after months of their gradual health deterioration, marking a tragic chapter for the park.
In a heartfelt announcement made today, Chief Executive Rachel Haydon expressed the sorrow felt by the team, describing it as "a very sad day for our team". She shared, "It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of three cherished lions—sisters Leah and Meeka, both 22 years old, and Meeka's son, Mambila, who was 15. Their deaths were due to age-related health issues."
Haydon emphasized that the "agonizing decision" to end their lives was not taken lightly, stating, "It was the kindest choice for these magnificent animals, allowing them to depart gracefully as their health had significantly declined."
The trio, who spent their entire lives together at Orana, had been under constant veterinary supervision for various age-related ailments, including degenerative muscle atrophy, suspected arthritis, and incontinence. Dr. Tristan Kamps, the lead veterinarian from Rangiora Vet Centre, explained that the choice to euthanise all three lions simultaneously was influenced by their social nature as a species.
"Lions are inherently social and family-oriented creatures," Kamps noted. "Leah and Meeka shared their entire lives together, and Mambila was particularly close to his mother. Delaying this decision for one or more of the lions would have severely compromised their wellbeing, especially considering their already declining health."
He further elaborated that isolating one of the elderly lions or attempting to introduce them to Orana's remaining pride of two male lions could lead to adverse welfare conditions or even serious consequences, given the territorial instincts of lions.
Cherished Family Members
Haydon pointed out that all three lions had outlived the typical life expectancy of 10 to 14 years, noting that Leah and Meeka, in particular, lived "exceptionally long lives." At the time of their passing, they were recognized as the oldest lions in Australasia.
"This remarkable longevity reflects the extraordinary care provided by our dedicated animal and veterinary teams," she remarked. "Making such heartbreaking decisions is undoubtedly the hardest part of our responsibilities, but we must prioritize the animals' wellbeing and their right to pass with dignity."
She also remarked that ongoing support would be available for the passionate keepers who had closely interacted with these treasured animals. The carnivore keepers at Orana expressed the privilege they felt in working alongside these "incredible and beautiful" lions for so many years.
Leah was fondly remembered as a vocal cat, exemplifying the spirit of a true lioness, while Meeka was known for her protective nature, often growling at visitors trying to photograph her son. Mambila, affectionately referred to as a "Mumma’s boy," sported a squeaky roar and remained close to his mother throughout his life.
"These lions were invaluable members of our whānau (family). Their absence will be deeply felt by everyone who cared for them over the years and by our community that enjoyed visiting them," Haydon stated.
The loss of these lions leaves a significant gap in the fabric of the Orana animal family. "We are incredibly thankful to our team for their unwavering dedication, compassion, and commitment to ensuring that all three lions received a peaceful and dignified farewell.
In light of recent events, it’s worth noting that a major investigation into Orana’s animal welfare practices was initiated in 2024 following reports by 1News. These stories, which first emerged in July 2024, featured testimonies from approximately 20 current and former staff members, many of whom described feeling overworked and overwhelmed with caring for numerous animals.
As a result, the Ministry for Primary Industries conducted an investigation and subsequently issued several recommendations, all of which were accepted by the park.
