Can lightning strike twice? Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios are hoping for a healthy run at the 2025 Australian Open, aiming to replicate their 2022 doubles triumph. It's been a rollercoaster since then, filled with injuries and setbacks, but their shared dream of success remains alive.
In January 2022, the childhood friends, Kokkinakis and Kyrgios, decided to enter the Australian Open doubles tournament. Their intention was simple: to entertain the home crowd. What unfolded was far more extraordinary. They blazed through the competition, winning six matches and seizing the Grand Slam title. It was a fairytale run, showcasing their incredible talent and chemistry.
But here's where it gets controversial... the road since has been paved with misfortune. Leading up to the 2023 Australian Open, Kyrgios suffered a knee injury, leading to surgery. The following year, a wrist issue forced him to withdraw from his home Slam. The duo's comeback in January 2025 was short-lived. Despite their best efforts, both players were battling physical issues and were forced to retire mid-match against James Duckworth and Aleksandar Vukic.
Kokkinakis underwent surgery on his pectoral muscle, sidelining him for the remainder of the year. Kyrgios, meanwhile, didn't compete in any tournaments after March due to his ongoing knee problems.
Kokkinakis is optimistic about the future, stating his desire to team up with Kyrgios at the Australian Open. The 29-year-old expressed a desire to give it their best shot, given their previous injury struggles. He noted that the crowd's enthusiasm is a major driving force behind their decision to compete together.
Kokkinakis, who will turn 30 in April, faced a complex procedure earlier this year. Surgeons used an Achilles tendon graft from a deceased person to repair his pectoral muscle. He's hoping this will extend his career by another five or six years. He is ready to take a risk to compete at his peak.
What do you think? Will Kokkinakis and Kyrgios be able to overcome their injury woes and make another run at the Australian Open? Do you think their partnership is still a force to be reckoned with, or are their injury struggles too significant to ignore? Share your thoughts in the comments!
