Manchester United's Winger Conundrum: A Historical Perspective
The Red Devils are once again in the market for wingers, a position that has been integral to their success throughout history. But here's the twist: they've spent the last three transfer windows under Ruben Amorim offloading wide players. This strategic shift has left fans and pundits alike scratching their heads.
United's rich history boasts iconic wingers like George Best, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who are revered as legends at Old Trafford. Other notable names include Steve Coppell, Gordon Hill, Willie Morgan, and Andrei Kanchelskis, who also left their mark on the club's legacy.
Even Eddie Colman, a 'Busby Babe' who wasn't a traditional winger, earned the nickname 'snake hips' for his exceptional ability to change direction at full speed.
Fast forward to last season, and United had five seasoned wide players: Jadon Sancho, Antony, Amad Diallo, Marcus Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho. The club invested a staggering £173m in these talents, with Sancho and Diallo joining for a combined £150m.
But the story takes an unexpected turn. Sancho, currently on loan at Aston Villa, was sent back to United by Chelsea last summer, who opted not to sign him permanently. With his contract expiring soon, United might part ways with the England international, who preferred the left side despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans for him on the right.
Antony's departure to Real Betis for £21.65m last September, shortly after Garnacho's £40m move to Chelsea, further depleted United's wide options. Rashford, another left-sided player, had a falling out with Amorim and spent the latter half of last season at Villa before joining Barcelona on loan.
Barca has an option to buy Rashford for £26m, but sources close to the player suggest no agreement is in place. With two years remaining on his lucrative United contract, further negotiations are expected.
This leaves Amad as the sole orthodox wide player available to Michael Carrick, who has also deployed Patrick Dorgu, a wing-back under Amorim, in a more advanced role. Carrick insists his decisions are in the club's long-term interests, but the situation raises questions about United's transfer strategy.
When asked about addressing the left-wing position, Carrick hinted at the need for flexibility: "You're always looking at the balance of the team and the squad... it's definitely something to look at." But is this a sign of a deeper issue?
United's recent history suggests a weakness in their recruitment strategy, especially on the wide left. The club's willingness to spend £65m on Antoine Semenyo, who chose Manchester City over United, highlights their intent to strengthen specific areas. RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande and Newcastle's Anthony Gordon are also on United's radar, indicating a renewed focus on the wings.
However, United's plans are complicated by their priority to sign central midfielders, with Casemiro's departure and Manuel Ugarte's limited playing time under Carrick. The club must navigate these challenges while considering the long-term vision for the squad.
As Carrick puts it, "We're always thinking of that perfect scenario... seeing how it suits on the pitch." But is this a case of too little, too late? The coming months will reveal United's true intentions and whether they can restore their historic strength on the wings.
