The NHS Prescription Prepayment Certificate is what Martin Lewis calls a 'season ticket' for prescriptions. It's a fixed-fee scheme with two options: a three-month certificate for £32.05 or an annual certificate for £114.50, payable upfront or in 10 monthly instalments of £11.45.
But here's where it gets interesting: the certificate covers ALL NHS prescriptions during the valid period, regardless of the number of items. So, if you collect more than three items in three months or 12 items in a year, you're likely to save money with this scheme.

You can purchase these certificates online, at some pharmacies, or by post. The NHS even allows for backdating by one month, enabling refunds for recent prescriptions with an FP57 receipt. There's also a dedicated Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) certificate for £19.80, covering unlimited eligible HRT medicines for a year, which could be a game-changer for HRT patients.
But who exactly needs to pay for prescriptions? In England, it's not a blanket rule. Those under 16 or over 60, pregnant women, new mothers, and individuals receiving specific benefits or diagnosed with particular medical conditions are entitled to free prescriptions.
