Imagine being plunged into darkness, with a sudden, deafening bang as your only warning. That's the reality for residents of Tranmere, who found themselves stranded outside in the cold for hours due to a major power outage.
This incident, reported on December 30, 2025, began with a loud explosion, immediately followed by a complete loss of electricity in the area. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) responded to the scene on Summerford Close shortly after 5 PM, after receiving reports of the power cut.
Scottish Power engineers were quickly dispatched to assess the situation, but the problem proved complex, requiring the assistance of a specialist digging team. A 30-meter safety cordon was established and managed by Merseyside Police to ensure public safety. The affected postcodes included: CH42 3TA, CH42 3TB, CH42 3TL, CH42 3UX, CH42 3YH, CH42 3YJ, CH42 3YL, CH42 3YQ, CH42 5ND, CH42 5NH, CH42 5NJ and CH43 1AA.
One resident, Ebony Smith, described the terrifying moment the power went out. "The power went off at about 4.55pm. All the lights went out and I heard a big bang," she explained. "We didn't know what it was, so we came out of our house and the whole close was in darkness." Firefighters arrived shortly after, and some residents were evacuated from their homes.
Scottish Power issued an update, confirming the unexpected power cut affecting the CH42 postcode area of Birkenhead. They explained that while engineers often restore power quickly by replacing a fuse at a local substation, more complex faults can take longer. The initial estimate for power restoration was 9:15 PM on the same day, December 30, 2025.
MFRS confirmed their presence on Summerford Close, stating that they were alerted at 5:04 PM and arrived on the scene at 5:11 PM. They found multiple properties without power, caused by a blown electric grid nearby. While there was no fire, a safety cordon was set up while waiting for Scottish Power. Additionally, part of Old Chester Road was closed, causing traffic disruptions.
