Uncovering the 1MDB Art Heist: Malaysia's $30M Recovery (2026)

You won't believe it: Malaysia has successfully reclaimed a treasure trove of art, valued at a staggering US$30 million, linked to the infamous 1MDB scandal! This recovery, spearheaded by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), marks a significant victory in the ongoing fight against corruption and the recovery of stolen assets.

Following formal discussions with the United States authorities, Malaysia has brought home 12 high-value artworks, including masterpieces by renowned artists such as Picasso and Matisse. These pieces, once held by auction houses like Christie’s and Sotheby’s, were connected to Jasmine Loo, a key figure in the 1MDB case.

The agreement with the US Department of Justice (USDOJ) was the culmination of two rounds of intensive talks. The meetings, held in Washington D.C. and New York in December last year, involved the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the USDOJ.

Among the recovered artworks are:

  • Pablo Picasso's L’Ecuyere et les clowns (1961)
  • Joan Miró's Composition (1953)
  • William H. Bailey's Still Life (b.1930)
  • Alexander Calder's Studies for Sculpture (1898-1976)
  • Henri Matisse's Femme Assise (1869-1954)

But here's where it gets controversial... The discussions also touched upon the case of US rapper Pras Michel, who received a US$120 million sum, a portion of which was linked to 1MDB and its shell companies. The USDOJ revealed that assets belonging to Jho Low, another key figure, remain in Singapore, not included in the US Settlement Agreement.

The talks also covered the cases of Tim Leissner, Tarek Obaid, PetroSaudi, Riza Aziz, and the law firm White & Case.

The MACC emphasized the commitment of the FBI and USDOJ to strengthen cross-border cooperation with the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) and the National Financial Crime Prevention Centre (NFCC). The goal is to trace, seize, and recover all outstanding overseas assets.

Meanwhile, assets in Hong Kong, Singapore, and France have been liquidated, with the proceeds slated to be transferred to the United States.

The Malaysian delegation was led by Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin, the senior director of MACC’s Special Operations Division, accompanied by NFCC director general Datuk Seri Shamshun Baharin Mohd Jamil, and deputy public prosecutor Norinna Bahadun.

The primary goal of these discussions was to enhance global cooperation between the two agencies. The focus was on strengthening joint investigations, mutual legal assistance processes, and recovering the remaining 1MDB-related assets overseas.

And this is the part most people miss... The recovery of these assets is a significant step in holding those responsible for the 1MDB scandal accountable. However, the fact that assets still remain in Singapore, and other jurisdictions highlights the complexity of this case.

What do you think? Do you believe this is a complete victory, or are there still more questions to be answered? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
