On December 13th, an Islamic State (IS) gunman claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian in Syria, a devastating event that prompted swift repercussions.
This past Saturday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the killing of Bilal Hasan al-Jasim, an Al Qaeda operative with direct ties to the IS gunman responsible for the December attack. Al-Jasim, described as an "experienced terrorist leader," was killed in a CENTCOM strike in northwestern Syria the day before. This action underscores the US commitment to holding terrorists accountable and protecting its forces.
Admiral Brad Cooper, the CENTCOM chief, stated that the operation demonstrates the resolve to pursue terrorists who attack US forces, emphasizing the commitment to never forget and never relent. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth echoed this sentiment in a post on X, including CENTCOM's statement.
The December 13th attack, which occurred in the central Syrian city of Palmyra, resulted in the deaths of the two US soldiers and an American interpreter. The US personnel were supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, a global coalition of over 80 countries working to combat IS. The attack also injured at least three Syrian personnel.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Syrian Interior Ministry revealed that the IS gunman involved in the attack was a member of the security forces, who was about to be dismissed for extremism.
In response to the December incident, US forces have launched extensive strikes in Syria, targeting over 100 IS sites, capturing more than 300 operatives, and killing at least 20 across the country. President Donald Trump had also vowed retaliation.
